how to live an adventurous life

When I went to counseling several years ago, my therapist observed that I deeply desired an adventurous life, and she asked me what that meant. I finally have a good answer. Adventure means exploring the world I'm in.

Adventure is defined as an unusual and exciting experience. But "unusual" and "exciting" are relative to personality, perspective, and season of life.

"We're going on an adventure to Natural Grocers!" I say to my 2-year-old. For me, it's just another errand. But for him, it is an adventure. I give him grapes in the car, I open the sun roof, and we try protein powder samples when we get to the store.

In my early 20s, I didn't know who I was or what I should do with my life, and I planned to keep traveling until I figured it out. My world was infinite in every way, and while unboundedness masquerades as freedom, I was trapped by indecision. So I sought after constant change and tried my best to avoid sitting still.

Novelty is attractive, but if everything is always new, you can't experience depth.

I no longer need to explore unfamiliar places to discover who I am. I know who I am. Now the adventure is in navigating a life in which my heart is always engaged.

I'm thankful for how my travels have shaped me, but I've grown the most when I've stayed in one place long enough for my heart to catch up. The richest, most transformative adventures I've had have been falling in love -- with God, with myself, with my husband and kids.

Relationally and financially, my world has more constraints, but I don't feel limited by boundaries. On the contrary, I feel empowered to pursue the areas that matter most to me. My future is exciting, but so is my life right now.

Here's how you can practice adventurous living:

1. Think new thoughts

Adventure begins inside yourself. It starts with an idea. "I wonder if...?" It starts with a new perspective to challenge your assumptions. "I want to learn more about..." And since it only depends on you, you're never too old and it's never too late.

2. Break out of your comfort zone

You're more likely to have unusual experiences if you make unusual decisions. Step out of the familiar, safe, and expected. Do something different -- not for the sake of doing it differently, but to live with intentionality and courage.

3. Take action to achieve your dreams

The process of realizing your dream is part of the dream. The excitement of chasing your dream is the adventure. Life is only boring if you lose interest in your life, so do what you need to stay passionate about the life you're living.

Here's to living a life you're excited about. A life of adventure <3
